The Fantastic Four's Origin (1961)
Fantastic Four #1
Issue #1
November 1961
In Fantastic Four #1, we are introduced to four ordinary astronauts: Reed Richards, a brilliant scientist; Sue Storm, his fiancé and an accomplished pilot; Johnny Storm, Sue's teenage brother; and Ben Grimm, Reed's best friend and a test pilot. During a space exploration mission, the astronauts are exposed to cosmic rays, which grant them extraordinary abilities.
Reed gains the power to stretch his body into any shape or size, earning him the moniker Mr. Fantastic. Sue can become invisible and generate force fields, becoming the Invisible Woman. Johnny develops the ability to fly and control fire, becoming the Human Torch. Ben, however, undergoes a drastic transformation, becoming a rocky-skinned, super-strong creature known as The Thing.
The Birth of a Superhero Team (1961-1963)

August 1972
Despite their initial struggles with their newfound powers, the Fantastic Four band together to form a superhero team dedicated to protecting the Earth from threats both cosmic and mundane. Over the next few years, they face challenges from villains such as Doctor Doom, Galactus, and The Mole Man.
In Fantastic Four #107, the team undergoes a major transformation when Ben Grimm finally embraces his true nature and sheds his rocky exterior, revealing his human form underneath. This issue marks a turning point in the Fantastic Four's history, as they become more confident and cohesive as a team.
The Golden Age of the Fantastic Four (1964-1970)
The 1960s were a golden age for the Fantastic Four. Under the leadership of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the team embarked on epic adventures that pushed the boundaries of the superhero genre. They faced cosmic entities, time-bending villains, and even traveled to other dimensions.
During this period, the Fantastic Four also developed their iconic uniforms and gadgets, including Reed's "stretchy" suit, Sue's force fields, Johnny's flamethrower, and Ben's Thing-shaped helmet.
The Bronze Age and Beyond (1971-1998)
The 1970s and 1980s saw more changes for the Fantastic Four. Jack Kirby departed the series in 1970, handing the reigns to a succession of talented artists and writers.
During the Bronze Age, the Fantastic Four continued to face challenges from both old and new foes, including the Sub-Mariner, Annihilus, and Kang the Conqueror. They also welcomed new members to the team, such as the Thing's stepbrother, Wyatt Wingfoot, and the psychic Franklin Richards, the son of Reed and Sue.
In 1984, John Byrne took over as writer and artist, bringing a fresh perspective to the Fantastic Four. His run introduced the popular character She-Hulk and explored the team's complex relationships and personal struggles.
The 1990s saw the Fantastic Four face threats on a global and cosmic scale, including the Infinity Gauntlet and the Onslaught saga. The team also underwent lineup changes, with long-time member Ben Grimm briefly leaving the group.
Legacy and Impact
The Fantastic Four have left an enduring legacy in the world of comics. Their adventures have inspired countless other superhero teams and characters, and their influence can be seen in film, television, and other media.
The team's enduring popularity is a testament to the timeless appeal of their characters, their dynamic relationships, and their ability to tackle both personal and global threats. The Fantastic Four continue to be one of the most iconic and beloved superhero teams in the world.
